Hardwood flooring is currently increasing in popularity and is considered as one of the most durable choices. This is especially when choosing a pre-finished hardwood floor to install. Some pre-finished hardwood flooring comes with a 50-year manufacturer’s warranty. With some basic carpentry skills and a few tips, the process of installing a hardwood floor is relatively easy. Unlike engineered wood, hardwood and solid wood are similar in that they are cut from original wood. Hence, every wood feature and composition is different.
Another option is reclaimed hardwood flooring, which you can find at salvage yards. There are likely some signs of wear and age, but the hardwood from old trees are stronger and longer lasting. Hence, you’ll pay about half what it would cost compared to new flooring, but it is more durable. So with this you can get a cheaper price with more durability, if you do not mind using reclaim hardwood. You can refurbished these hardwood by way of polishing, grinding and varnishing to make it look new. However, this is not readily available and difficult to find, even if you wants it.
Types of Hardwood Flooring
Hardwood floors can normally be used in any room, predominantly in kitchens.
We install the 3/4″ Brazilian Teak over 3/4″ plywood. If you are installing hardwood floors on a concrete slab or have a height problem, use 3/8″ materials because they’re quite thinner.
Some red oak is a top grade hardwood. This piece is 2-3/4″ wide. It usually has very little knots and little color variation. There are different species and widths other than oak.
Natural maple has more color variation and small knots. The piece here is 3-1/4″ wide and comes in 4″, 5″ or 6″ widths. It is 12 percent harder than red oak, and people use it on gym floors or bowling alleys, etc.
Rustic ash has larger knots and, again, color variation. It still makes a good floor. This is a less formal wood and would be good in a family room, etc.
Solid hardwood can be used in almost any room that isn’t really prone to moisture. So, it’s best if you avoid from using it in basements, bathrooms, laundry rooms and mudrooms. This will eventually damage the wood and the flooring will not last long.
